Observation of
Teacher Carlo's Class

My first classroom observation took place in class 7G. Teaching in the Philippines is quite different from teaching in Thailand. In Thailand, students primarily follow the textbook, whereas in the Philippines, the focus is on student participation and encouraging them to express their opinions.

Every student actively engages in the class, whether through asking and answering questions, participating in activities, or being involved in the teacher's instructional process.

Teacher Carlo conducted his lessons in an engaging manner, consistently stimulating students through his activities.

He maintained a dynamic approach by frequently asking and answering questions to check students' understanding. If students had any doubts, they could ask immediately. The students were highly engaged, attentive, and demonstrated great enthusiasm throughout the class.

As an observer in this session, I gained new teaching techniques and classroom management strategies that I can adapt and apply in the future.

LEARNING MATERIALS & INNOVATION

The Teaching Materials

The teaching materials in the classroom focus on integrating various technologies, such as using televisions to present PowerPoint slides and incorporating online games into the lessons. These tools keep students excited and engaged throughout the class, as they look forward to experiencing new and innovative approaches they have not encountered before.

In addition, the teacher uses handmade teaching materials, such as vocabulary boxes, word boards, and question or word cards, allowing students to physically interact with the materials. This technique also enhances student participation by giving them a more active role in the classroom.

Eclectic Approach

The University of Santo Tomas Education High School employs a variety of teaching methods, combining textbook-based instruction with the use of technology. This approach ensures that lessons remain engaging and prevents the learning process from becoming monotonous.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

The Assessment in Classroom

Teacher Carlo assesses his students quickly, partly because he knows their personalities very well. This is

a positive aspect, as it demonstrates how much he cares about his students and their individual needs.

The assessment is based on student participation in answering questions. Students who respond correctly are given extra points.

This includes asking questions related to content from the previous lesson to review key concepts before introducing new material, as well as completing end-of-class exercises to gauge how well students have understood the material taught that day.

Throughout the teaching process, English is used exclusively. If any student speaks in Filipino, the teacher encourages them to switch to English. I believe this is

a great approach because encouraging students to speak English every day helps improve their language skills, which is why students in the Philippines are often proficient in English.
