The objective of the SEA-Teacher program is to provide an opportunity for student teachers to exchange and develop their teaching skills. Participants will have the chance to experience and learn about the education systems of different countries while gaining hands-on teaching experience abroad. Additionally, the program allows participants to immerse themselves in the cultures of various countries and learn new teaching techniques that they can apply to their own future teaching practices.
Additionally, this program is a collaboration among countries in the Southeast Asia region, supporting student teachers who are seeking to develop their teaching skills. It provides opportunities and experiences for student teachers interested in participating in the program, helping to support their aspirations and professional growth.
The approach to achieving the program's goals requires student teachers to complete both classroom observation and teaching practice. Additionally, assessments are conducted to evaluate their performance and progress throughout the program.
The first step is an orientation about the school where the student teachers will be assigned. This orientation helps them learn about the environment, culture, and basic information of the institution, serving as essential preparation before they begin their duties.
The next step involves observing classes at the assigned grade level. During the first observation, student teachers observe the classroom teacher. In the second session, they assist as teaching aides. Student teachers are required to familiarize themselves with and understand the characteristics of their students. After this, they will take on the role of the main teacher. Before teaching, they must prepare a lesson plan. Once the lesson plan is approved, they can proceed to teach the class in a full-fledged teaching role.
The final step is the evaluation of the student teacher’s performance in the assigned classroom.
During this process, a supervisor or mentor will observe the teaching session. The evaluation will assess
the student teacher's skills based on specific criteria outlined in the assessment form.
As a participant in the program, I gained tremendous benefits from this experience. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a new environment, broaden my horizons, and explore my goals for personal and professional development to improve myself further in the future.
This experience in the Philippines has provided me with valuable insights, perspectives, and techniques for self-improvement. It has reignited and strengthened my passion for becoming a teacher. I have seen new approaches and methods that I can adapt and apply to my own classroom in Thailand in the future. Additionally, exchanging ideas about the teaching profession with my peers from the Philippines and Indonesia has broadened my perspective on the role and value of being a teacher.
One of the biggest challenges for me was using English throughout the teaching period. Most of the students had an excellent command of English, as they use the language in their daily lives, which results
in their impressive pronunciation. However, their accents were quite different from mine, creating a slight communication barrier. Once we adjusted and understood each other better, this challenge faded away.
We had a lot of fun and enjoyed the teaching and learning process together.
The experience of participating in this program has been a truly beautiful memory for me. I made the most of every moment by learning new things, and I do not regret a single second spent on this journey.
Everyone at UST was incredibly supportive and welcoming. They were always there to help me to the best
of their abilities whenever I faced any challenges. They truly became great "buddies" to me, and without them, my time in the Philippines would not have been as enjoyable. This made me realize how short my time here truly was. If I could extend my stay a little longer, I believe I would have created even more beautiful memories.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the University of Santo Tomas for the warm welcome and exceptional care provided to us. You took such great care of us, and UST is truly the most beautiful university I have ever seen.
I don't have suggestions or recommendations for the program because I believe everything has been organized perfectly. I will definitely recommend the SEA-Teacher program to my juniors in the future so
they don’t miss out on such an incredible opportunity.
